Karen Rossouw, senior lecturer and skills coordinator at Guvon Academy, the training facility of Guvon Hotels, has been elected as a committee member of the Gauteng branch of the South African Chefs Association (SACA).

SACA is a non-profit industry organization that has been representing chefs, cooks and caterers at all levels for the past 37 years. Its core purpose is to set and maintain the highest level of culinary excellence, food standards and professionalism throughout South Africa. Membership is based on the desire to give back, to contribute and make a difference, to share and impart skills and knowledge and life times of experiences, to ensure that the industry is a better place for future generations of home grown South African chefs

Rossouw says of her new responsibilities: “It is a privilege to be chosen to be part of such a great committee under the Guvon brand and I look forward to the challenge at hand.

Highlights so far in her career include being part of the Bidvest World Chefs Tour Against Hunger 2011 campaign, implementing a training kitchen at Glenburn Lodge, implementing new workshops for students and private individuals, and helping with numerous functions at the Guvon properties.

Guvon Academy conducts courses in Professional Cookery as well as Food and Beverage Management and Event Management, ranging from six months to 18 months. Practical courses and workshops on wedding cakes, sushi, kids party planning, executive waiter training and an innovative domestic worker course are further part of the offering.

Students receive theoretical training at Glenburn Lodge, including practical sessions and function training in the hotel’s new training kitchen. Opportunities for in-service training exist across Guvon’s five lodges and hotels, including: Glenburn Lodge and Kloofzicht Lodge (Muldersdrift), Fairway Hotel and Spa (Randburg), Askari Game Lodge (Magaliesburg) and Umbhaba Lodge (Hazyview).
