Staff at Southern Sun hotels will be learning all about cricket as the group gears up to host players and fans from all over the world in 2003.

Eddy Khoza, GM of the Milpark Holiday Inn Garden Court in Johannesburg, and Richard Weilers, Southern Sun group marketing director, get the feel of The Wanderers cricket stadium with members of the Highveld Strikers team.Specialist teams at Southern Sun hotels all over the country are already preparing for the influx of sportsmen, officials, VIPs, journalists and supporters who will attend the Cricket World Cup to be staged in South Africa in 2003.

Already well versed in catering for sports tourism, Southern Sun has been awarded official hotel group status for the tournament. The 14 participating national teams and their officials, cricket VIPs and about 2 000 members of the media and supporter clubs are expected to begin arriving in South Africa on 4 February 2002.

"We are very proud to have been selected as the official host sponsor for such an auspicious event and will do everything possible to make it an unsurpassed success for both cricket and South Africa," says Richard Weilers, Southern Sun group marketing director.

"A staff training and motivational programme will be devised specifically for the 2003 Cricket World Cup by our training and development department to discuss not only the game of cricket but also the importance and benefit of this event for South Africa and our group.

"We regularly host numerous sports teams, from junior leagues to international tours, and are confident that all the necessary services and facilities to meet the cricketers' needs will be in place."

The hotel group will work closely with the 2003 Cricket World Cup Organising Committee to meet specialised meal requirements and provide comfortable rooms, additional security, cricket savvy staff and well equipped team rooms for relaxation and pre and post game sessions.

Supporters' needs will also be catered for, with hotel restaurants operating on extended shifts, especially during day/night games. Hotels will also provide information to tourists on the availability of currency exchange facilities, meal preferences, bar facilities, site seeing tours and places of interest to visit when in South Africa.

Southern Sun is currently the official hotel group for Athletics South Africa, the Premier Soccer League, the SA Football Association, the SA Open Golf Championship and the SA Rugby Football Union and the Tri Nations and Super 12 rugby series.
