Philips wins Gigaton Award

Philips won a prestigious Gigaton Award from the Carbon War Room at the World Climate summit. Philips was awarded for its EcoDesign process which identifies the environmental impact of energy efficiency, recycling, and for its lifetime reliability and results from across all Philips teams across the world. The award was collected by Philips Vice President for Africa JJ van Dongen and Harry Verhaar senior director of energy and climate change at Philips.

Described as the ‘Oscars for the climate change world’, the distinguished jury for the Gigaton awards included Sir Richard Branson, Mary Robinson former President of Ireland, Jose Maria Figueres former President of Costa Rica, Nobel prize winner Rajenda Pachauri, former head of UNFCCC Yvo de Boer and retired General Wesley Clark from the US army.

The Gigaton Awards are designed to inspire and challenge businesses to run their business in the most carbon-efficient way possible. It recognises the best-in-class in five major sectors, one of which is ‘Consumer Discretionary’, Consumer Staples, Telecommunications, Industrials and Utilities.
