The widely respected and highly influential German wine journal, Weinwirtschaft, recently released its annual list of “Top 100 Wines of the Year 2011” selected from more than 600 red, white and rosé wines competing for a spot on the podium.
The Roodeberg 2009, a wine brand which has been a part of South Africa’s wine heritage and a household name since 1949, brought home the accolade of “Best International Red Wine in LEH (multiple retail)” as well as attaining second position in the category of “Best New World Red”.
Wines are selected according to a combination of four criteria : tasting results, price-quality ratio, sales and lastly, the marketing efforts of the wine producer. The preparation commenced in October 2011 when wine retailers, importers and leading national and international producers were requested to nominate their best-selling wines. The covert tasting of the wines took place on 4th and 16th November 2011 at the Meininger publishing house.
“We are extremely proud and excited about this accolade as we feel that it is a pure reflection of the wine consumer’s behaviour in Germany, an affirmation that Roodeberg truly is a South African icon which continues to gain popularity throughout the world”, says De Bruyn Steenkamp, Brand Director KWV Wines.
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Petit Verdot, this vibrant and well balanced wine displays upfront summer berry aromas, complemented by subtle cedar and spicy oak flavours. The fruity palate is balanced by subtle integrated oak flavours, making it a perfect accompaniment to grilled, roast or barbecued meat or chicken dishes. Available from most retail outlets nationwide the Roodeberg 2009 retails for approximately R79.99.
