Cape clicks into tourism seasonDecember 20th, 2011 by Andrew Moth | Categories: industry, technology, tourism
The Western Cape is gearing up for a spectacular holiday season with the roll-out of Your Best Summer Ever, a new promotional campaign by Cape Town Routes Unlimited (CTRU).
The official destination marketing organisation for Cape Town and the Western Cape has partnered with hundreds of restaurants, hotels, tourist attractions, tour operators and health and wellness establishments to provide travellers with discount vouchers.
Alan Winde, the Western Cape Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, said this week. “Because of the economic downturn, people are looking for holiday bargains. CTRU has canvassed the industry to come up with some great deals and we are ready to welcome visitors from South Africa and abroad.
“Recently, our destination achieved a host of new accolades including making it onto The New York Times’ list of the world’s top 10 hip cities and securing a place for Table Mountain as a New7Wonders of Nature. We are confident that there will be an upswing in visitor numbers.”
Information gathered from the industry in the Western Cape by Hotel & Restaurant over the past couple of weeks suggests that the upswing is gaining traction.
Calvyn Gilfellan, CEO of CTRU, says: “Given the current trend among holidaymakers of seeking out information about a destination with their fingers rather than with their feet – by going online rather than by physically visiting information offices, we will drive tourists to our website.
“Once there, they will have access to unbeatable discounts on a variety of services that will add value to their experience in Cape Town and the Western Cape. In addition, these special offers will give them an array of opportunities to explore regions and attractions outside of the city, thus taking the pressure off more popular attractions and activities whilst boosting the economies of lesser known areas.”
The Your Best Summer Ever website (www.tourismcapetown.co.za/summer) has been designed for visitors from outside the Western Cape. All of the special offers are highlighted on a Google Map on the homepage.
Users will not only see where in Cape Town and the Western Cape they can get a special offer, they are also able – with the help of Google Street View – to see the actual establishment or attraction offering the discount.
In addition to providing access to discounts, CTRU also offers a prize valued at R30 000 to the winner of the Best Summer Ever photo competition. The prize includes a return flight to Cape Town, two nights’ accommodation and free tickets to major attractions. All people need to do is upload pictures of their value-for-money experiences to www.facebook.com/TourismCapeTown.
Another element of the CTRU campaign is the use of endorsements by celebrities to promote the destination. TV presenter Zizo Beda recently experienced the best of the Cape Winelands and shared this experience with the rest of the country on her show Selimathunzi on SABC 1.
The campaign runs until March 31.
