Egypt to host ‘tourism and media’ conference

The United Nations’ World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Ministry of Tourism of Egypt are organising an international conference on tourism and the media in the Red Sea town of Marsa Alam in April.
With the support of CNN as a media partner, the conference to be held on April 25 and 26 will bring together major players from the media and tourism worlds to strengthen the working relationship between the media and the tourism industry, particularly in challenging times.
The organisers say that amid global economic uncertainty, political upheavals and natural disasters, it is more important than ever that the tourism sector and the media work together to communicate the right messages at the right time.
“Unfortunately, a large gap remains between the two. The tourism sector is often not fully prepared when it comes to working with the media. The media, for their part, tend to underestimate the importance of tourism in terms of its economic and social potential, as well as how their coverage impacts the tourism sector.”
Workshops at the conference will touch on issues from crisis communications, to the way a newsroom works and the emerging role of social media.
