Two baristas at the Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel on the Durban beachfront, Ayanda Ngidi and Khanyisa Fica, will compete in the National Barista Championships in Cape Town next year.
They were placed in the top six in the KZN regional barista championships held at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping recently. The Elangeni was the only hotel to have two baristas finish in the top six of the KZN regional competition which attracted 37 contestants.
Ngidi and Fica admitted that “the competition was tough”. With an audience of 60 looking on and eight judges scoring them on technique, taste, presentation and knowledge, they had to prepare and serve 12 drinks. They also had to explain the processes as they worked.
Congratulating the duo, Mike Jackson, GM of the Elangeni, said: “The Elangeni has a reputation for making great coffee, but this win just spurs us on to even greater heights and train more baristas, upgrade our machines and make the Elangeni the place to go for the best coffee in town.”
