Guvon Academy forms part of the greater Guvon Hotel group and is encouraging school leavers to give some thought to a career in hospitality.

Academy director Adrie van der Merwe says: “While many feel that a university degree provides the essential knowledge for certain professions, careers in the hospitality industry often benefit more from of a hands-on approach, combined with theoretical knowledge.

“Guvon Academy offers courses in professional cookery, food and beverage management and event management, ranging from six months to 18 months. We also offer practical courses and workshops on wedding cakes, sushi, kids party planning, executive waiter training and an innovative domestic worker course,” adds van der Merwe. “This is ideal for students who need to fill a gap year or want to test the waters of the hotel industry. The hotel industry gets under your skin and soon students know that there is no better industry to work in, if excitement and variety is what you are after.”

Students receive theoretical training at the Glenburn Lodge, including practical sessions and function training in the new training kitchen. Opportunities for in-service training exist in one of the five properties within the group, including Glenburn Lodge (Muldersdrift), Kloofzicht Lodge (Muldersdrift), Fairway Hotel and Spa (Randburg), Askari Game Lodge (Magaliesburg) and Umbhaba Lodge(Hazyview).
