The R500-million Middelburg Mall will open to shoppers on 19 April 2012. In November 2011 developers announced that demand pushed up the shopping centre’s initial size by 10 000sqm to 43 000sqm, most of which is let. The mall has been designed to expand eventually to over 55 000sqm.

The development is on track despite a setback in the form of minor storm damage to the roof in January 2011. It is a one level shopping centre, with some 2 400 parking bays.

Developers have designed a mall that will give visitors a bigger and better shopping experience. A wide selection of popular South African retailers are listed for the mall and many have started moving in, fitting out shops, training staff and getting ready to bring fresh new quality shopping to Middelburg and its surrounds.

Some 94 shops will be on offer, with anchor tenants including Checkers, Woolworths, Edgars, Pick ‘n Pay and Game.

Retail centre developers and investors Flanagan & Gerard Property Development & Investment and Moolman Group are driving development of Middelburg Mall.

“Middelburg Mall will provide the underserviced shoppers of the area with an easily accessible, quality shopping experience,” says Patrick Flanagan of Flanagan & Gerard. “The large number of retailers which have eagerly invested, to be closer to their shoppers at Middelburg Mall, prove its necessity. We’re pleased to bring local consumers more variety, more choice and more quality at Middelburg Mall.”

Restaurants include Wimpy, Spur, Sausage Saloon, Mugg & Bean, Mozart Ice Cream, McDonald’s, King Pie, Delhi Delicious, Dilly’s Doughnuts, Cappuccinos, Steers, Fishaways, Debonairs and Giramundos.

Many other major branded stores are included in the offering, including the major banks, fashion stores, technology suppliers, bookstores, optometrists, and a range of service suppliers.

“Middelburg Mall is tenanted to provide comprehensive retail to the growing and ever more affluent community of Middelburg and its surrounds,” explains Jannie Moolman of Moolman Group. “However, we are confident that, with all this, it also has sufficient critical mass to attract consumers from a wide trade area.”

The mall is located off the N4 highway with access via both the Fontein Street offramp and the Tswelopele Avenue. It has good visibility, making the shopping centre a landmark in the area.

The mall design ensures easy shopper flows and visual appeal. Bright high-ceilinged air-conditioned spaces are lined with modern, high shop-fronts to create a fresh and exciting shopping experience. The finishing touches are currently being made, including tiles, painting, railings, bathrooms and other features.

“We are comfortably on schedule to open on 19 April 2012. Middelburg Mall will be a world-class retail asset that meets the needs of both consumers and retailers, by bringing them together,” says Flanagan.
