Spier goes beyond Earth Hour

As part of its ongoing green initiative, the Spier hotel, conference, wine farm and tourism destination near Stellenbosch, has calculated the energy offset of a stay-over guest as 20.83kg CO2 emissions per room per night.

In association with Impact Choice and the Plan Vivo Foundation it offers overnight guests the opportunity to make their stay at Spier carbon neutral by donating R5 per room per night.

The Plan Vivo Foundation is a sustainable-development project working with forest communities, and participating guests will receive an electronic certificate stating that they have offset their carbon footprint whilst staying at the Spier Hotel.

Spier also registered as a company supporter for Earth Hour, the largest mass participation environmental event in the world.

Guests that stayed at the Spier Hotel on 26 March were encouraged to join in this symbolic gesture by switching off their hotel room lights between 20h30 and 21h30 and using the candles provided in their rooms. Spier also switched off the lights in the main hotel building for this hour.
